Brain Injury Support in the Northern Territory: MAC Scheme
If a brain injury was caused by a motor vehicle accident in the Northern Territory, the Motor Accidents Compensation (MAC) Scheme may fund your treatment and rehabilitation, including speech pathology, for as long as you need it.
What is the MAC Scheme?
The MAC Scheme is a Northern Territory Government scheme that provides benefits to people injured or killed in motor vehicle accidents in the NT. It's a no-fault scheme, meaning cover applies regardless of who caused the accident, and it covers all road users, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motorbike riders and cyclists. Territory residents are also covered if a Northern Territory-registered vehicle is involved in an accident interstate.
The Scheme is overseen by the Motor Accidents Compensation Commission (MACC), with claims administered by TIO on the Commission's behalf.
Who is eligible for brain injury support in the Northern Territory?
Anyone involved in a motor vehicle accident in the NT can be covered by the MAC Scheme, and benefits scale with the severity of the injury. For a serious, life-changing brain injury, this can include access to the Scheme's dedicated lifetime care and support benefits, which apply to:
- Brain injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Amputation
- Burns
- Blindness
To determine eligibility for lifetime care and support, reports from treating and independent medical specialists are required, and an occupational therapist typically visits at home to recommend the support services needed.
What does the MAC Scheme cover?
For people with less severe injuries, MAC benefits cover necessary medical, hospital and rehabilitation treatment for a defined period. For people whose injuries are assessed as catastrophic, lifetime care and support extends this to ongoing personal and domestic support. For example, help with mobility, showering, dressing, home maintenance, or living in a supported setting on top of continued medical and rehabilitation treatment.
Speech pathology and telehealth under the MAC Scheme
Speech pathology sits within the medical, hospital and rehabilitation treatments the MAC Scheme can help pay for, subject to it being necessary and reasonable treatment for the accepted injury. The Scheme also has a dedicated telehealth pathway for participants, recognising how important remote access to treatment is across the Territory's vast distances between regional and remote communities and specialist services in Darwin or Alice Springs.
